Are Screen Porches Common Up North?

Great Cross-stitch idea from Whip Up
There is no pattern there, but I found this really amazing cross-stitch idea at Whip Up. All I could think is, every self-respecting Halloween addict with a screen porch should covet this! And if you live in the south, like me, there are screen porches and doors and windows aplenty to try this on.

If you can't cross stitch, I'm willing to bed some artistic skill + paint + patience could accomplish something similar. More than once in my childhood my craft paint got on our screens and left little filled in bits to the mesh.

...I was left to wonder, though: for those of you not in the hot summer months of the south, how common are screen porches? Because there is just nothing like a summer lightning storm viewed from a comfy screened-in porch. You should try it sometime.

No screen porches that I know of. Covered decks. Farmers-in-law have a covered carport we watch thunderstorms from.

That is so cool! I'm absolutely going to do that.
Well, I don't have a screen door, so I'll do something similar. =)

I love this idea! Here in Phoenix, we don't have many days where we can leave the doors open and enjoy the weather but, this is certainly something that I would do and leave up year round!

What a brilliant idea. I think I will try my hand at a web soon ;)

Yes, here in Canada we too love our screened in porches, even though we may only get to use them for a few months every year. Many of us put up portable gazebos in our backyards just so we can sit outside and not be eaten alive by mosquitoes. I'd rather have the cross stitched spider than the real ones I've flicked off the window screens!

That is beautiful! We already traded out the screen door for a storm door but these makes me want to switch them back!

In MN they are more common in the city and with older houses. The burbs, not so much. When I was buying my house I quickly realized for my area I wasn't going to get one. I have already gotten 2 estimates on how much it would be to add one. I miss my screened in porch.
