Everything is in painful need of organization, and time is not my friend of late.
One thing I have found time for is the No Sleep Podcast.

A spin-off of the very awesome r/nosleep forum, the No Sleep Podcast is perfect listening for the Halloween season. In each podcast, a few of the better stories from the forum are read aloud for the listener.

Most of the reads could use a little polishing, but since the forum is open to anyone who has a mind for writing short fiction in the horror genre -- who am I to quibble over the editing for fun, free prose?

And occasionally there is a story that really delivers. I would say that Season 1 Episode 8 has one of those. The last story, "Mountain Laurel," really delivered the chills:

It could be because I like hiking. It could be because I've spent quite a bit of time in the woods, haunted by the sneaking suspicion that someone could be watching. It could even be because I listened to it this morning while driving into work in the dark... Whatever the case, this one was good.

So if you are looking for something to listen to in the Halloween season that gets the hairs up on the back of your neck, give the podcast a listen.
visit creepycupcakes.blogspot.com for more from carrie mae
Carrie Maehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03093454201738305510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624972120499424506.post-12097522559127234852015-08-21T12:29:00.002-04:002015-08-21T12:29:45.636-04:00What's It Got in its Pocketses?!The title for this post is from the Hobbit, not from LotR like the costume. DON'T JUDGE ME! ;)

It's been too long, boos and ghouls. It's been too long and I'm overdue planning my costumes to boot!

Tiny Hobbit

I have a daughter now (she'll be 13 months when we hit Halloween!). My heart's crooked little desire was to dress her as good-guy doll Chucky this Halloween. The Husband and I would go as Jason and Freddy, respectively.

The Husband, however, thinks the tiny Banshee looks like a hobbit and that we should take advantage of that fact.
Huh, actually it's true. She does.

This means considerably more work tracking down costume pieces and sewing Wizard costumes (which will NOT be intricate affairs, I can tell you... we are also in the middle of moving and planning a trip with the whole, entire family before the end of October), but I think it's worth it.

Banshee is going to be FRODO BAGGINS.

The Husband wants to be SARUMAN.

I guess that makes me GANDALF.

This post is dedicated to Frodo. :)

I'm going to 100% forget the jacket. We live in the south, and Banshee will be warm enough in the tiny green cloak I still need to sew. Other than that, I have her costume pieces largely gathered:
Contrary to the volume of updates, I really miss this blog. My mind is on Halloween SO OFTEN, especially now that I have a child (holy mackerel, a ten-month-old!) and am looking forward to my first real suburban trick-or-treating this year.

Of course, I haven't had any time for my favorite video game series in the last, oh, YEAR, but this is kind of helping ease some of the ache:

This is as close as I'll be getting to a Silent Hill walkthrough of any kind; I love it and all, but I just can't imagine getting too close to (even a fake) Pyramid Head. ;-)

It's finally here!!! I've been waiting since December (when I got this calendar) to change over to this month. Not only is it my favorite MONTH, but it's my favorite ART, of my favorite Cartoon Network CHARACTER (Marceline the Vampire Queen).
Oh, the plans I have planned for this month. The leaves are starting to fall, the pumpkin spice lattes are out, and the spiderwebs are thickly woven about the front-yard tombstones around town.

What are your Halloween-month plans? And how jealous are you of my adorable calendar?
visit creepycupcakes.blogspot.com for more from carrie mae
Carrie Maehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03093454201738305510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624972120499424506.post-70017490065453773242013-09-24T17:29:00.002-04:002013-09-24T17:29:21.235-04:00Who's Halloween is it Anyway? My husband's (September) birthday is over... not that I don't love him and want to celebrate the aging process with him, but we have an agreement that the Halloween stays put away until after his candle-day.

While I'm loathe to brush the cobwebs fully away from the ol' bloggity blog, seeing as how much atmosphere they add, I thought I'd tiptoe into a post with two lovely, pumpkiny finds from Lowe's:

Here is a great soup for a warm day when you want to be refreshed, but still dream of fall flavor (and something a touch Halloweenie). It's sweet with just enough savory to make for a nice midday meal.

Though I will warn you: cold soup is not for everyone (my beloved husband, for instance -- he just can't get past the fact that it's cold).

1 granny smith apple, cored and chopped

2 carrots, peeled and chopped

1 tbs chopped red onion (or shallot)

1 tsp ginger (or 1/2" chopped fresh)

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

juice from 1 lime

1 tbs sesame oil (can substitute olive oil or tahini)

1 cup cold water

black sesame seeds (optional, for decoration/serving presentation)

In a food processor or powerful blender, dice the apple, carrot, and onion until fine. Add ginger, cinnamon, salt, and lime juice and blend again until well combined and very well chopped up.

Use the drizzle function of the food processor and add the oil, followed by the water - let the soup mix until everything is very very fine and well combined. At this point you can serve the soup, or chill it until ready to eat (though it may separate a bit during chilling).

TO STRAIN OR NOT TO STRAIN? -- If you want your soup to be broth-consistency, you should strain it through a fairly fine sieve. I like the pulpy bits of carrot and apple, personally; but for a lighter texture, you could definitely strain this. To thicken a strained version (instead of serving it as broth) adding cream or almond milk a little at a time for a creamier soup with more texture could be a nice variation.

Top with sesame seeds if you like; it's pretty.

I served the soup for lunch with warm ginger-lemon scones (this is my new favorite scone recipe, btw -- biscuity, and perfect with a little bit of clotted cream or butter).

1 cup all purpose flour

2 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 inch piece of fresh ginger, grated

1 Tablespoon lemon zest

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 stick butter, melted

Parchment paper

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Mix the grated ginger, lemon zest, and sugar in a small bowl. Pressing the ginger into the sugar will help release some of the flavor.

In a large bowl mix together all dry ingredients. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the melted butter and buttermilk. Stir until all the flour is moistened and it's just coming together, but don't over-mix.

Flour your work surface. Divide the dough into two sections and form each into a rectangle, flatting to about 1" thickness. Cut each rectangle into quarters, then slice each quarter diagonally to create scones. You should have 16 little triangles.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Put the triangles on the baking sheet about 1" apart. Bake on the middle rack for 18 minutes. Let cool before serving (leftovers can be served cool, or microwaved for 30 seconds or less to re-warm).

I wondered to myself, 'how different can Fright Fest be from Six Flags theme park to Six Flags theme park across the country?"

There aren't that many locations, and I just sort of assumed they all put on the same shows during the spooky-season, or else rotate out (Six Flags Over Georgia seems to go back and forth between two different 'Dr. Fright' shows - 'CarnEvil', and some other one I can't remember that also has a lot of singing:

The quick search that lead me to that video (I was actually trying to see if they used different Dr. Fright costumes, depending on which part you were at) suggests that other parks have totally different shows. I saw something about 'American Deadstand' at the Texas park, for example.

So my question to all you roller-coaster loving haunt-fans out there is this: if you've been to Six Flags Fright Fest and saw any of the shows, what where they and and which park were you at? And did your Dr. Fright look like this one:

As long as I'm cooking up a practical storm, I'm trying to make at least one Halloween-friendly thing a week.
This week, I had some cute little sweet potatoes hanging out in the pantry and wanted to do something easy - so this is a straightforward, easy, and tasty way to add some orange-and-black to your plate.

If you can find black sesame seeds, go for it! If not, the combination of the wedges and sauce give you all the Halloween color palette you need (and the sesame seeds be damned).

2 pounds sweet potatoes (yams), peeled and c into 3/4-inch thick wedges

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1/4 tsp cumin powder

1/2 teaspoon coarse salt

1-1/2 teaspoons black sesame seeds

Dipping Sauce:

2 Tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

2 Tablespoons rice-wine vinegar (not seasoned; substitution of white vinegar was also tasty)

1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 500 F.

Cut sweet potatoes into 3/4-inch thick wedges.

In a large bowl toss with olive oil, sesame oil, cumin powder, and salt until evenly coated.

Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.

Bake for 20 minutes, or until tender and slightly browned.

While sweet potatoes are cooking, fix the dipping sauce by combining 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice-wine vinegar, and 1/4 teaspoon toasted sesame seed oil in a small serving bowl. Set aside.

When the sweet potatoes are done, immediately sprinkle with 1-1/2 teaspoons sesame seeds.
Transfer to a serving dish and serve with dipping sauce.

My favorite husband admitted, as we ate them, that he'd had his doubts about the combination of sweet potato, sesame flavor, and soy sauce - but that it was really good. The resulting wedges are very soft, so if you would prefer something crispier it might call for deep-frying rather than baking -- but either way, this snack is very 'win.'

What's that, lurking in
the shadows? Why,
it's a lovely smoothie!

I'm experimenting a lot lately, as any proper Mad Scientist would do. Specifically, I'm dabbling heavily in the world of green-colored juices and smoothies.

Quirky, non-conventional, and green? Such delights are perfect for a spooky table.

The current project on the slab is a pale, sweet, subtle blend of pear and avocado that I'm calling the 'Madam Monster.' It's kind of girly and delicate.

Ingredients

2 Green d'Anjou Pears, cut into small chunks (any pear you like would work here, but try for a green variety)

1 cup water

1 Hass Avocado

1/2 cup milk (or almond milk)

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp honey

1 - 2 cup(s) ice cubes

Steps

Put the slices of pear and water in a blender, and puree until everything is smooth (there may be a slight apple-sauce consistency, but it should be closer to a smooth liquid)

Scrape the avocado flesh in to the blender (discard the peel and seed), add the milk, vanilla and honey. Puree until smooth. Taste, and add a bit more honey if you want more sweetness.

Add the ice, and use the blender's icebreaker setting to incorporate into the smoothie. This adds a lot of texture to the end smoothie, as well as making sure it's a nice temperature.

Pour into glasses, and serve. This is a great one for straws.

I was inspired by a smoothie recipe and YumSugar.

Dracula Trap Juice

I made this recipe from the Juice Nut - which is actually called Ginger Garlic Immune Juice - to help fight off a cold (every little bit helps, right?).

The idea of adding garlic raised my eyebrows. It sounded gross, and made me think immediately of a tricky, poisoned concoction devised to trap Dracula into ingesting some garlic. It's a dark, thick red. The flavor is sweet, with the garlic and ginger adding just a bit of spice.

Thick, Red-Purple, Sweet but savory

You could always make this without the vampire repellent garlic, and it would be just as good; leaving it in, though, adds a bit of a spicy kick (not to mention some antibiotic properties).

Dracula Trap

2 beets with greens

2 apples (one golden delicious, one york)

1 blood orange (or orange of your choice)

¼ of a ginger root

2 cloves of garlic

You need a juicer to make this, but if you have one - definitely consider this next time cold season comes around.

Little olive spiders add a lot to the dish,
both for presentation and flavor!

Directions

Prepare your spaghetti squash; set the oven to 375 F, pierce the skin in several places with a fork or sharp knife, and cook whole for 1 hour. Slice it in half, and carefully (due to the heat) scope out the seeds and pull the strands out using a fork. (You can also find much quicker microwave methods at About.com).

You can toast your walnuts at the same time as you make your squash; set to 375 F, and toast for 5 - 10 minutes. They will be a golden color and have a nice smell when they are done. It's a tad subjective.

Prepare gnocchi per package directions, and strain (reserve 2 tbs cooking liquid)

Make your pesto! Basic, walnuts, garlic, salt, Parmesan, and butter all go into your food processor. Process until chopped, adding the olive oil via the drizzle mechanism (i.e. poured into the top). Stir in the gnocchi cooking liquid before starting step 5.

Mix and decorate! Stir the drained gnocchi and spaghetti squash strands together in a large bowl. Add the pesto, and stir to coat the gnocchi and pesto. --- Fake spiders on the table might be a good tie-in here, or you can cut little spiders from black olives and put a few on top of the dish just before serving.

The way to a girl's heart is through the stomach, so you can bypass that pesky breastbone and rip the darned thing right out!
My name is Carrie Mae and I maintain a blog called CreepyCupcakes (Life & Times of a Happy Halloween Homemaker). With unintentional irony, I must admit that it has very little to do with cupcakes, although I do love to bake!

The more fall-flavored or creepy, the more I love it. One of my favorite blog-related topics is food, and I'm down for making just about any and everything--whenever I can, I tie it back in to Halloween because that's how I roll, Witches.

This holds true year-round; you can't limit your spooky to just October!

What my blog actually started out as was my wedding-planning outlet. True story: I got married on Halloween in 2009. Outside. In the rain. In the cold. With costumes and skulls and spiders and candy and stuff (!). To an abnormally normal husband who supports me fully in my Halloween obsession.

Getting ready for the wedding provided me with the perfect excuse to plan a big Halloween party, and gave me the motivation to make many elegantly-spooky props and projects (most of which I shared on my blog):
How to rim a martini glass? You simply wet the edge of the rim (in thise case, with water so as not to upend the sweet flavor), and dip it in the powder
(in this case the cinnamon), gently.

Again, from the Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook - the Almond-Ginger-Peach Treacle Tart!

I had to make some changes (I had no fresh peaches, and we're trying to be less refined... at least when it comes to our sugar), but this was a really excellent concoction. My version had a nice, dense feel and a rich, nutty flavor that was not very sweet and went perfectly with coffee.

Serves 8 - definitely consider it as a snack for your next Harry Potter reading marathon

Crust:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup finely ground almonds

2 generous tablespoons of honey

1/4 tsp salt

1 stick (8 tbsp) cold butter or margarine, cut into pieces

1 large egg yolk

1 Tbsp heavy cream

1 tsp vanilla

Filling:

4 large, dried peach slices (rehydrated/boiled, then chopped into thin pieces)

1/3 cup maple syrup (or more - up to 1 cup if you want more sweet)

2 cups fresh bread crumbs (6 to 8 slices fresh bread processed to crumbs in a food processor)

1/2 cup chopped almonds

1 tsp freshly chopped ginger, very fine

1 egg white beaten with 1 tbsp water, for brushing the top

Directions:

Pulse almonds in a food processor until coarsely ground. Add flour, salt, honey, and butter - pulse in a food processor 15 to 20 times until the mixture resembles coarse yellow meal, and then transfer it to a large mixing bowl.

Beat the egg yolk with the cream and vanilla, then pour it into the flour-butter mixture. Toss with a rubber spatula until the dough forms, then knead briefly. Make 1/3 of the dough into a disk and 2/3 of the dough into another disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to 3 days.

Preheat the oven to 350F. Sprinkle both sides of the larger disk generously with flour. Roll out into a 11-inch circle. Press the dough into a 9-inch tart pan, going up the sides. If the dough cracks, you can re-refrigerate and re-roll it, OR (as I'm more likely to do, pinch off the excess from the sides and press it into the cracks to mend them.

In a big bowl, combine the peach slices, syrup, bread crumbs, chopped almonds, and ginger, mixing well. Scrape the mixture into the tart shell and spread it evenly with a rubber spatula.

Using the smaller dough disk on a heavily flour-dusted work surface, roll out the dough 1/8-inch thick. Cut it into strips with a sharp knife. Lay half the strips over the tart in one direction and lay the other half over the tart in the opposite direction, forming a kind of lattice. You won't want to to weave them... there will be breaking, and mending, and that will be enough. It still looks pretty in the end.

Brush the egg and water mixture across the strips, then bake 45 minutes (until golden brown). Serve warm or cool. A drizzle of honey or a little vanilla cream is excellent with this. Coffee is recommended as an accompaniment.

It's all about Parsnips today. For the uninitiated. parsnips are those things in the grocery store that look like ghostly carrots. Unlike carrots, you aren't very likely to see them sold with their top parts attached: they get beheaded before sale because handling their leaves and stems can cause a type of chemical burn.

Don't you kind of love it when vegetables are villainous like that?

The root part, though, is delicious. It's kind of sweet and savory at the same time, and has become a regular addition to my weekly menus. This past week, in fact, we made a) juice, b) mashed parsnips, and c) roasted parsnips.

"Apples and Neeps" juice was a winner. We used 2 sweet and 1 tart apple, and threw in a tad more mint than the recipe called for. The result was this pretty, perfectly pale green juice with a bit of a creamy texture. The taste was like apples with just a hint of something more flavorful; the lime and mint add a kind of mellowness to the sweetness, and the parsnips give it a sweet little kick.

Sure, you need a juice to make this blend - but if you have one, I highly recommend it. You could easily sell this as some kind of slimy witches brew for the kiddies. (You can find a visual here).

I've cooked several things out of this now;
it's really a pretty good cookbook.

The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook has a recipe for mashed parsnips. Mashed parsnips are exactly not like mashed potatoes. For starts, they are sweet. Think 'mashed carrots, only not so carroty.' Not everyone is a fan of this, especially if they are caught unaware.

You stew them up until soft, add some butter and milk and salt and pepper and nutmeg, and mash away until you have a sweet little pile of side dish. We made cornish pasties (with lentils instead of meat), buttered peas, sauteed cabbage, and cooked up some fake-steak-and-kidney pie I had languishing in the freezer. They were the the most Potter-ific veggie plates ever!

*************

Toward the end of the week, I still had two lonely little parsnips wilting away in my crisper. Toss in a little fresh rosemary from the garden, and we made a sized-down version of:

Baked Parsnip Fries with Rosemary (Epicurious)

2 1/2 pounds parsnips or carrots, peeled, cut into about 3 x 1/2" strips
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary, plus 5 sprigs rosemary
1 large garlic clove, minced
3 tablespoons olive oil
Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon (or more) ground cumin

Toss parsnips, oil, garlic, salt/pepper and chopped rosemary. Bake at 450 F for 10 minutes with the rosemary sprigs.

2013 is going to be a great year. At least for me, it can only be better than 2012 (maybe the world really did end on the 21st - I feel lighter somehow). I've made a list of all the spooky things I know are happening this year.

There are 3 sections I'd like to add, and will probably add an 'events' page to the blog to keep up: EVENTS, HOLIDAYS, and BOOKS. So if you can think of any really awesome scary or spooky happenings or know of any horror/supernatural books we should be on the lookout for, please post a comment! (movie, tv show, or whatever else welcomed too).

Happy Spooky 2013, y'all. It's got to be a good one.
